The fire ants in S. Tx. are small and black in color. They build mounds especially after rains like we have had. They will sting the crap out of you and leave puss bumps where they do their thing. I have had the best luck in killing them out with a product called Demon. Small packs of a powder like substance you mix into water and pour on the mounds. Everything else just seems to move them and not kill them. Demon isn't cheap so it probably wouldn't be a good choice for a large area, only spot treatments.
