I converted my 8N to 12 volts years ago and it runs like a top. I have the front mount distributer, and 12 volt coil that sits on top. In this application you need the extra resistor. Now for the side mount distibuter some 12 volt coils have a bult in resistor so adding and extra resistor might cause a problem.
