Cranking rpm is everything as Doug said. The de-stroker is a $15.00 part from your JD dealer. Odds are with time, winter etc. The connections and cables have high resisitance. That drops the voltage to the starter which = slow cranking. Use a analog volt meter and measure between the starter body and the large brass post going into the starter motor. There has to be at least 10.0V there. 2/00 cables, at least one and better two group 31 batteries. And bolt the chassis return cable direct to a starter mounting bolt or the engine block. Bolting the battery chassis return cable to sheet metal somewhere is looking for trouble.
