I have a 2005.5 Jetta TDI 5spd. I love the thing. Even with the 235 rubber (came with 205s) and sticky performance tires, I still get 40 city and 42-45 highway. With the original tires, I was getting 42-45 city and 45-47 highway going 70-75 mph. I love the car. It has a lot of torque, the interior is great, it handles like a dream, and it is A DIESEL! lol. The new common rail TDIs are selling pretty high right now and are hard to find, but there are some good used ones around. If you are looking at a used one that is 2004 or newer, make sure it has only seen 505.01, 506.01, or 507.00 all of its life, otherwise you could be looking at some cam issues (about a $700-1000 in parts repair if I remember correctly).
