I wouldn't weld anything with gas. Absolutely nothing. That's something I learned to do 15 years ago in shop class and haven't touched since.
I learned to weld on a 225 amp Linc AC welder. Those were one tough old welder and good for basic work. It'll do what you want... If you plan on doing somewhat more welding then an AC/DC machine is nice. Right now I'm using a 225/150 amp DC Miller Thunderbolt. They're nice little welders. Either one has a 20% duty cycle though, so if you plan on getting into heavier welding you need MORE welder. The suggestions to go out and look for an old Miller DialArc or Lincoln IdealArc are well founded. Jush watch the VOLTAGE and PHASE on those things. Those were light industrial welders and as such could very easily be had in 440/550 V and various other combinations, utterly useless to you on household current... Again, if cheap is what you want, the old Lincoln AC buzz box is what you want.
Do V out the joint. It'll require a few passes for that depth. I'd do the whole thing with a 7018 rod but I've also taken to sandblasting that dirty old stuff lately. I hate using 6011's and avoid them unless I have to use them. I don't like the splatter... If you go with an AC welder, get the 7018AC rods. I don't know where you're at or what suppliers you have but I'd suggest you get a good supplier for rods. I'll run Liquid Air or BOC rods. There are cheaper ones out there like Marquette and I've nver found they worked worth a damn, especially the 7018AC rods. I had a box of them that I couldn't burn until I ran them in DC reverse on the Thunderbolt. Prax also supply a good rod from what I'm told...
