The Ku Klux Klan has been many things at many times, but it was never a "harmless social group". It was formed shortly after the civil war by former Confederate officers who weren't happy about losing either the war or their slaves. From the start they intimidated negroes, carbetbaggers, and pretty much anyone else who got in their way.
I lived in the South for many years, and I heard many of the old-timers claim that the KKK didn't single out blacks but harassed any "sorry" man, white or black. Supposedly the Klan would intimidate whites who drank too much, beat their wives or conducted other "sorry" behavior. I never believed it for a minute, since this would have forced them to burn crosses in front of the homes of most of their own members!
Now it's possible that at some point in time, one or another of the various Klan organization did some good somewhere. But aside for the anecdotes of the old-timers, I've never seen any evidence of it. The facts say just the opposite: the Klan was and is a bunch of thugs who have joined together for the express purpose of terrorizing blacks and other minorities.
