As Fordfarmer already posted - the 601 is pretty useless with a rear tiller or a rear snowblower unless it has the SelectoSpeed. Four speed is way to fast in 1st or reverse, and the five speed is better - but not perfect. Only good fix is - to have a Hupp aux, Everett Trencher aux, or a F&T aux. added to the rear of the tractor trans - or just get a different tractor.
Four speed in 1st goes over 3 MPH at high RPMs and almost 4 MPH in reverse.
Five speed in 1st goes 2 MPH at full throttle which is much better - but still too fast in very hard ground with a rear tiller. Soft ground it does OK. Reverse is faster than with the four speed and no good with a rear snow blower.
I've got a 641 (601 with a four speed). It has the 134 gas engine. I use it for bush hogging only and even for that it's not the best. The non-live PTO is a constant headache - even with the added over-running clutch.
I bought a British IH B-275 for $800 and it is worlds better then my Ford 641. Live PT0, live hydraulics, differential lock, dual range trans (8 forward and 2 reverse). I use a five foot rear tiller in very hard ground and it works great.
I also have a Deere 1020 with again -dual range trans - 8 speeds forward and 2 reverse - and it too works great with a tiller.
