I think shingle choice will depend a lot on where you live and whether your energy needs are greater for heating or air-conditioning.
I would agree that lighter colored shingles will last longer.
I would also mention that many, many, black roof shingles have uneven coloring and---well don't look very nice in my opinion.
I am cold blooded and require a lot of heat. As an example I haven't used air-conditioning since 1997. I guess that tells you that when I re-shingle it will definitely be with a darker shade to draw heat.
