Dave, the holsteins at the weights you stated will require a 12% protein finishing ration. Your ear corn will average about 7% protein and your pellets are 40%. To come up with a 12% ration you will need 300 pounds of pellets and 1700 pounds of ground ear corn per ton. The ear corn will have less protein than regular shelled corn because of the cob factor, thus you need more supplement. If you want to hand mix this, mix 5.66 pounds of ear corn and 1 pound of supplement. Depending upon what weight you take the steers to, you can decrease tha amount of protein in the ration. Once the steers get over 1100 pounds, you can cut the protein content down to 10%. I have spent 38 years as a livestock nutritionist. As suggested, the Pearson Square is a fine tool for calculating the ingredient requirements for a given protein content needed. Hope this helps.
