I don't think it's so much them ENGINEERING them on purpose to go fast in reverse. It's a matter of convenience and $$$. Many of the old 4-speed trucks are set up the same way.
There's only so much room in a typical tranny case for the extra gears needed for reverse. A SLOWER reverse means bigger gears/more reduction and a bigger "bump" on the side of the case to make room for the larger gears.
An example is the LATE 8N fords that had the "wart" on the LH side of the tranny case made bigger to allow for a larger reverse gear for more reduction and a slower reverse.
