Please remember (pastors especially should be aware of this, from the Bible as well as the dictionary) that blessings and curses are prayers, wishes, petitions; for example when a person blesses the food or curses his neighbor. "God bless America" is a prayer asking God, the only One who can bless or curse anything, to bless this nation. In the song, we continue our prayer; "stand beside her and guide her through the night with the Light from above."
So when people say or sing this prayer, please don't stereotype/judge them as trying to boss God around, thinking they deserve His mercy. No doubt there are some with that attitude, but most of us agree with you, as we repeat this prayer, that unless God blesses America with conviction (a brokenness for sin), repentance (a genuine turnaround), and renewal (growth in righteousness), we are lost. Thank you for the reminder.
