Check the spark irst. It should look FAT AND BLUISH-WHITE, the color of lightning. If it isn't then you need to find out why. Make sure the timing and advace are correct. If that's fine then make sure that the carburetor mixture is correctly set. Sometime you have to enrich it it when you are putting it under heavy load. Since you say that it smells overly rich, pull the plugs and look at them. Is there dry, fluffy deposits on them. If so, that's due to a rich mixture. Sometimes if you have an air leak downstream of the carb metering section( thottle shaft, connect flange gasket between carm and intake manifold,or the intale manifold to cylinder head connection or a cracked intake manifold) you enrich it to run good at idle and it' too rich for high speed under load. The fix is to find the iar leak and fix it and then readjsut the carb.
