Well so far there has never been a true 12 volt coil made for the front mount N series tractors and they are ALL 6 volt coils for the most part so a ballast resister IS in fact needed unless you like to spend a lot of money replacing coils. What is made now day and called a 12 volt coil at best is maybe an 8 volt coil which will not stand up to 12 volts for long. Check the archives in the N forum and it has been talked about over and over and over again
