Im starting to see that the hammer seems to be causing lots of problems for you.The next time you think of using a hammer,try using something else like a torch,(I have even got stuff broke loose by heating it with a propane torch before)penetrating oil,big pipe wrench,big channel locks,vice grips,and keep at it without beating on it.Beating on stuff is the last resort,just dont get to beating on it before you try real hard other ways.However you could have got that piece out by beating on it more,with a big punch or chisel,I think.
