I keep 30 to 40 hens with 2 to 4 roosters for fertilization. Why do I do it? Not for the money, that is for sure. I do it for health reasons. In our region of the Midwest, we have a real high per capita rate of cancer. I feel this is the lack of different types of protein in our diets. It is of my opinion that we can return some of the proteins missing in our diets by consuming "free range" eggs. Chickens by free range can scratch and consume insects and/or other debris found in wooded areas that can digest and pass these proteins onto the egg. Solutions to preditor problems. I had to train the chickens to stay within the wood lot I have fenced off(It took losing some roosters) and training them to return to the pen every evening (feeding time) on there own. They are let out about noon to 3pm (depending upon the amount of eggs laid) and locked in a feeding time. I have a quarter horse (for some reason is territorial) and chases preditors off. I also had to place fake owls on the property to protect against falcons.
It works well for me and selling the eggs is a break even venture for feed costs.
