EXTREMELY worth it! I built a coop from salvaged materials for lest then $5. We have enough eggs to feed several neighbors, and lots of dead chicken in the freezer. I mix/grind my own feed. I have over 75 birds and don't even come CLOSE to the $10-$12 a week figure. Mine also free range.
It's harvest time - there are a LOT of farmers who need bins cleaned out or stuff that falls out of the augers cleaned up. The corn I planted this year came from seed that was given to me. I just "planted and forgot" it, so the cost is minimal. I use goat/chicken manure for fertilizer. It's also not chickens that draw in mice or "rats" - it's the feed. Store it right and you won't have rodent problems. I have one waterer for my chicks that hatch, and another for my meat birds. The rest I have set up so God waters them. They also go to the barn and clean up anything they find in/around there. They get table scraps and anything else we find.
I have (and my wife's dad has...) taken chickens to auctions and gotten over $10 a piece for them. It just depends on what time of year and who's a the auction. I hatch out several "broods" a year to keep the "herd" going.
The best thing is - KEEP IT SIMPLE. It's not rocket science - it's only chickens. You don't need a fancy coop, chickens are more durable then people think.
