Thanks again for your thoughts about my ignition problem. Since I hadn't touched anything since buying the tractor 7 years ago, I did a major tune-up and its running well now.
I can't say exactly what the problem was, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't the coil. I replaced the cap, rotor, condenser and coil but that didn't change anything -- still no fire. I had hesitated to pull the points because I couldn't see how to get them out. But finally I got new points in and also replaced the ground side wire from the coil to the points and she fired up. So I guess it was one of those two things.
Funny thing is the points didn't look that bad to me. There was one fairly deep pit, but I'm sure I drove old Chevies as a kid with points that were a lot worse than these. Also, that wire had no apparent breaks -- just was bent near the terminal in a way I didn't like.
