Our old 434 stopped running the other day and is very hard to turn over. I have taken off the head and sump and found only the forward cylinder bore with some surface rust on the lower skirt. There was a large amount of emulsified oil around the engine, with the consistency of grease, despite relatively new engine oil. There was also a lot of water, but the oil removed seemed OK, without any milkyness. Is anyone familiar with this phenomenon?
After honing, I reassembled, but due to a silly mistake have cracked out a sizable chunk of the cylinder skirt, enough to expose part of the lower scraper ring at BDC. I've put it back together but the engine is still too tight to turn with the starter (can just be turned with two foot bar).
Does anyone know anything simple I may have missed? I haven't checked the big ends but everything seemed ok when turning without the forward piston connected. I am now considering a complete rebuild.
Can I get away with running with a cracked skirt? Can I damage the engine beyond the point of a cylinder/piston replacement being possible? If I can get it turning I am considering running it as is with a damaged skirt until the cylinder fails completely.
Has anyone pulled a sleeve on a 434? I have heard they are particularly difficult.
