I've had an HD tv for over a year, and I don't have cable...just an antenna on a 20-foot tower.
Here in the Louisville, KY area, I can get NBC on channel 3-1, which is the same as analog channel 3...but I also get 3-2, which is 24-hour weather. Channel 3 also broadcasts a carrier signal on 3-3, but the music videos they used to carry are no longer aired there.
ABC Channel 11 only broadcasts the main signal. KET, the PBS outlet, has 15-1, which is the same as analog channel 15; 15-2, which is the same as analog channel 68; 15-3, which is regional educational programming; and 15-4, which is mostly GED education programming. Then there's channel 21-1 thru 21-4, which is primarily religious in nature. CBS channel 32 and FOX channel 41 only have the main channel, as is the case with independedt channel 58...and KET-2 is boradcast on channel 68 and has the same content as channel 15-2.
I can tell when a program is being broadcast in HD as opposed to being an analog program on an HD channel: the HD programs fill the full width of the screen, while the analog programs have a 1-1/2"-2" black "border" on the sides.
If you're on channel 3-1 and hit the "channel up" button on the remote, it moves to channel 3-2,rather than going to channel 11, as it would on an analog set. Also, when manually entering a channel choice, you must enter ALL the digits, beginning with a zero. Channel 3-1 must be entered as "0031"; channel 32-1 becomes "0321" when you manually select it.
It ain't rocket science, but it does take some getting used to.

But alas, my carb foiled me again, it would fire a second then flood out. After numerous dead ends for a replacement carb, I went to work fixing mine.I soldered new floats on the float arm, they came from an old motorcycle carb, replaced the packing on the throttle shaft with o-rings, cut new ga
