The Mythbusters did do the gas can, cell phone, getting back in your car test. They concluded that cell phones CAN'T start a fire. You absolutely can start a fire with static electricity which is why you should fill gas cans on the ground. It isn't just because of static more likely to build up on a plastic bed liner. If there were a fire, IT'S NOT IN YOUR VEHICLE. If you re enter your car while filling, be sure to touch the car again after you get out to discharge any static away from the filler. Then there are the caught on tape shows showing people loosing their vehicles to fire at a gas station simply because they were unwilling to fill the can on the ground. Bottom line is you're a fool if you fill gas cans in your trunk or bed of your truck.
