While i agree with you on most of your stuff, there is a Toyota plant just north of me. Not very many people there make $17, unless you count the ones working in the on site day care.
Most all jobs there start on the other side of $20, and by Gauwd you earn it. I know several folks who have left the coal mines and gone to work on the Toyota line. Most say they like the money but would like to go back to the mines for some rest.
When you go to work at Yota, the first day and start orientation they tell you there is not pension. NONE. They have a very good 401K, and promiss that if you do what their finacial advisers say you will have over a million in it after 25 years. One guy I was talk'n to was telling me that when they said that one guy in his class asked what if you wanted to work longer that that. They told him that he was 30 years old and by the time he was 55, a cool million would seem like a good deal.
They don't carry every mouth-breather who walks through the door for the rest of the their natural life, what Yota does do is give more that a good days pay for a good day's work and send you on your way. Thats where they have done a much better job of bean count'n than the big three.
While we do agree the unions are not looking out for the better good of every one, Toyota's lead is not because they don't pay well.
