Well, actually they don't. R&D for one. The foreign makers began the "Americanization" of their vehicles by copying the American manufacturers vehicles. Japan was especially noted for copying almost everything. And it still goes on. It's a lot cheaper to let the Big 3 pay for the R&D! Also, taxes. Most of these new foreign plants in the USA were built with huge taxpayer incentives to start with and real estate tax abatemants of 20 years or more. There's one right down the road from me. I remember the inducements offered and taken. Almost all the foreign plants got these inducements and more. As a percentage, very few US manufacturers got them. Another thing is dealership costs. A lot of the foreign makers sold themselves to established American car manufacturer's dealerships as a "sideline". So, less costs there too. It list goes on and on.
