The flathead Ford six was produced from inception until 1952. In 1952, Ford introduced their own straight six with overhead valves. Good engine, but not high performance. Ford V-8 went to OHV in 1954. Curtis Turner was one of the hot drivers in the early days of NASCAR. He raced a flathead Ford 6 in one class of race. Ford engineers asked him what RPM he was turning. "About 5800". Ford; "Not possible. That engine experiences destructive harmonics at 4700 RPM". Turner: "Hell, we go past that engine speed so fast that it has no time to harmonica". Turner once rented a car, absolutely stock, and entered it in a race. Destroyed it.
