To me, having a variety of guns is like having a good set of wrenches when an adjustable wrench 'will work'. While its true it will work, most of them time, it rarely works as well as having the correct wrench for the job.
For me, the guns and their purpose:
.22 general varmit shooting when I dont want to blast brain and innards all over me (rifle and pistol). I got the pistol when I was a kid to carry with me on the tractor. .223 coyote, dog, and groundhogs as a rifle to carry with me around the farm. High capacity mag for long range coyote hunting (every 3rd round a tracer). This isnt a want, this is an essential. My cows pay my bills and dogs and coyotes run, kill, and molest my calves. .270 deer hunting .50 black powder, deer hunting in b.p. season 20 ga trap and skeet shooting, general small game hunting 12 ga antique, inherited, family heirloom .32 LR antique, inherited, family heirloom 9mm pistol got for personal protection, gave to my mom for same purpose .45 personal protection around house, car, vehicle. got before I got a c.c. permit .32 personal protection concealed carry. I spend a lot of time in very bad urban areas with a lot of high dollar camera equipment and multiple female models. I take my safety and theirs serious.
