Since I got out of farming about the only thing I do now is bushhopg the feild once a year. The last time I did it was in November just before Thanksgiving. Not a sign of the cut stuff out there now.I too use a five foot mower but I only utilize four foot of it.I go in the direction so that the cut stuff piles up where the uncut is and when I make my next pass I chop it up throeing it to the uncut side and so on and so on.Eventually I end up with a couple or rows that all I have to do is run over those a couple of time and it kinda disapates. But time will make it rot away eventuall leaving a mulch for the new bed.Biggest problem Ive found is that some plants reseed them selves but if there is not gomma be a crop there I wouldnt worry about it.
