I'm in Nova Scotia... Our class system was introduced 25-30 years ago. Before my time. This is basically a cascading system.
Class 1 is for tractor/trailer and supercedes all other licences with the exception of school bus and motorcycle.
Class 2 is for motor coach.
Class 3 is for straight trucks with a Gross weight over 14 tonne.
Class 4 is a chauffeur licence for taxi's and short busses.
Class 5 is the standard licence that everyone gets and is restricted to a vehicle weighing up to 14 tonne.
Class 6 is a motorcycle licence for someone who doesn't have a class 5
Class 7 is a beginners licence and
Class 8 is a Farm tractor licence that you can get at age 14 and will qualify as a beginners licence at age 16.
All except the Class 1 are restricted to towing trailers of 4.5 tonne unless you have a heavy trailer endorsement.
Air brakes are dealt with on a separate test here as you could have a class 5 licence and legally drive some vehicles with air brakes depending on the registered weight...
Motorcycles are dealt with as an endorsement IF you have a licence higher than a Class 6.
School buses are dealt with strictly as an endorsement in addition to having the appropriate class licence for the particular size bus.
It seems a rather complicated system, but it's been more or less working for us...

But, on the other hand, there is a secret language that our mechanical companions readily do speak. It is an interesting form of communication that involves all the senses of the listener. In this series we are going to investigate and learn the basic rudimentary skills of understanding this lingo.
