Power plants use a soft bituminous coal , which bellors a lot of black smoke into the atmosphere , polluting the air. There's lots of it , and cheep

I live two miles away from the largest coal power generating plant in Kansas and have NEVER seen black smoke come out of its stacks. The only thing you do see is steam being released occassionally.
When I was growing up they were building the plant and my science teacher assured our class that the new plant would leave soot on our cars every morning as the heavy dew pulled it out of the air. He was wrong too.
