I guess the argument is - those lights are, in essence, little coal-burners since that's where most of the electricity comes from in the US. The heat certainly isn't being wasted if inside - just not using the coal-fired generators as carefully as a CFL or LED light.
The outdoors could stand some wasted heat here to get rid of the ice. 8 degrees F this morning, but supposed to warm up a lot. Just took these photos an hour ago. Took my dog for a romp up in fields and it's like walking on broken glass. Many trees bent over and touching the ground. I was suprised to see the one sunflower still standing.
