Interesting demonstrator- anybody remember the Toyota Land Cruiser and pickup version from the late 60"s? Toyota made trucks about Jeep size on up to 2 tons for years, sold them around the world. US tarrif for "Commercial" vehicles got bumped to 25% in argument with French, "utilities" got 5% tariff so the Land Cruiser continued to be sold here while trucks were not imported for awhile. The mini pickups got in eventually, some like Subaru Brat had set of seats in back bed to make them more passenger than cargo vehicles for import tax purposes. Worked for Jeep dealer early 70s- the Toyota large pickup that rarely got in would have been a strong competitor to J4000 Jeep -and C1/20 Chev or F100/250 Fords or Dodge D100/200 but would have had that extra 1/5 cost of import tax. Wagoneers and Chev Suburbans were competing in market with the Land Cruiser that didn"t have the big import tax and knew the competition was serious. Mercedes is car importer in US- most people don"t remember that Daimler/Mercedes is a large truck maker in European market along with Renault and Fiat-- the "Commercial" tariff kept them from US market for years but didn"t stop them from making a good truck for rest of world. US market with EPA regs, highway safety regs and import taxes helped US makers for a long time. The world competition did what they could here with different vehicles that didn"t have the hassles- now the matured trucks in rest of world are being made in US to avoid tarriff and will compete with Ford and GMC on roughly even money field- the best quaility, most usable vehicle as percieved by buyers will get the market- Toyotas car reputation will help initially for some sales and unless trucks have a lot of horror stories about drive train they will get a good chunk of market.
