If all the connections are perfect then 2 6v batteries should work better.
BUT the connections are never perfect so you loos a lot.
I switched from the std 2 6volt batteries on my dad's 966 to one 12 volt that looked like the 6 volt batteries just twice as wide.
Best thing I ever did we would get about 5+ years of trouble free starting before we started getting problems. The 2-6v started having problems much sooner
Also the cold weather got a lot better as the faster you turn over a desiel the better it starts.
The connections are actually more important in the real workd.

What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?").
