Lanse, You're doing great, now you need to squirt some oil in the cylinders and turn it over a few times, THEN put something in the spark plug holes to keep out dirt and moisture. I'm afraid that thing behind the pulley IS your front oil seal, it needs to be against/into the front cover. If you don't worry about the oil leak NOW you will have a big mess when you start the engine, and a lot of tearing down to fix something that can be "easily" fixed before radiators,etc. are installed.
