If you're buying a used gun, the older versions are Model 36, 36A, and before that, model 1936 - instead of 336. I have several of the older models is 30-30 and love them. Much smoother action than the Winchester equivalents. Also have a newer 336C in 35 Remington.
Some verions as such: 336 Zane Grey only made in 1972 336A-DL - deluxe wood and checkering 336A (plain) - made 1948 to 1963 - brought back in 1973. 336C - started in 1948 and got the 35 Remington chambering in 1953. 336T - made from 1953 and offered with 44 Magnum 1963 - 1967. 336DT (Deluxe Texan) - 1962-1964, select walnut stock, engraving with longhorn steer and map of Texas.
