Wow, thanks for posting! I took up your challege and went on Honda to compare their 2009 Civic sedan to their Civic Hybrid sedan. The difference in starting prices is $8,100, which would buy 2,700 gallons of $3 gasoline. To get the average miles per gallon for each car, I added the city and highway mpgs together and divided by two. I got 42.5mpg for the Hybrid and 30mpg for the regular sedan, so the hybrid averages 12.5mpg better. Next I calculated how much gas each car would burn to drive 100,000 miles. 100,000/42.5mpg=2,353 gallons of gas and 100,000/30mpg=3,333 gallons of gas, The hybrid would save 980 gallons of gas, but at $3 a gallon that would only save you $2,940. Not even remotely close to the extra $8,100 in sticker price.
How about 250,000 miles? nope, the hybrid would only save $7,353, still not $8,100.
300,000 miles?, yes, if the car lasts that long you would have saved $723 in gasoline.
Now, all calculations were done with $3 gasoline and there is some wiggle room, but its close enough to paint a pretty clear picture.
