I'd tend to agree, seems like everyone is getting 20MPG out of their diesels, until they aren't. The latest Dodge and Ford diesels are getting at BEST 16-17 mpg, and usually closer to 13-14 MPG. Even if a gas engine is getting 13-14 MPG, it comes back pretty fast with the 40%-50% greater cost of diesel fuel.
The block, crank and pistons on a dieselshould last longer than that of a gas engine, but the cost of replacing fuel pumps, injectors and other EXPENSIVE items suddenly makes the diesel less efficient to operate. Especially now that gas engines last so much longer than previous gas engines if properly maintained.
One of my brothers has a 2000 Ford F350 with the V10, he averages 15 empty and 9-11 loaded (as in 12-14 big round bales on a goose neck) and he's got over 200K on it. So far he's WAY AHEAD of his twin brother's same truck with a 7.3. Another brother with a 6.4 Ford is WISHING he could get the same mileage as the old V10 gas and is dreading the day his goes out of warranty as he's already seen how common and expensive some of the failures can be under warranty.
