It seems to me that many people are comparing half ton trucks to the 3/4 ton truck that you want. There are only two engine options in new Chevy GMC 2500HD trucks (08 or 09), the 6.0 gas and the Duramax Diesel. Manual transmissions are not avaiable for either of them, they have to be automatics. We recently purchased a '08 2500HD 4x4 4 door cab 6.0 gas, 6 speed automatic, 8 foot bed (almost impossible to find) with 200 miles on it for $26K no trade before taxes that had a sticker price around $36K. It was the best deal we could find. As much as we would like to have another diesel, with the price of gas vs. diesel and the added cost of a diesel truck, it does not make economics for the normal user. The fuel mileage of the 6.0 is about 13 MPG empty and about 10 loaded, just to break even on the difference in fuel prices the diesel would have to 20 empty and 15 loaded, which is unlikely. After you factor in the $6K adder for the diesel the economics go to pot.
