If you ever want to mow or use a rototiller, you will want a live PTO. If you just have to move bales and not load or unload them on to a trailer or into a feeder, you could carry them on the 3 pt. An 8N is too light to be moving bales around but a newer 35 to 50 H.P. would work fine to carry them with the 3 pt. You might need to add some weight up front but that's pretty easy to do. If you don't need a loader, you can get by just fine without power steering. Diesel is worth paying a little extra for depending on the tractor. A Massey 35,50, 135,150,165,230,245 etc. would be a good choice. Perkins diesels in the 100 series and up are very economical to run and easy to start. Earlier Perkins like in the 35 are good engines but indirect injection so they're a little harder to start. Don't be afraid of a diesel but there are some to stay away from. The Standard diesel has a reputation of being a hard starter and pales in comparison to the Perkins. We used to have an 8N and it was a good tractor but traded it on a 135 diesel with a live PTO to run a mower. Big improvement but I think the 8N went through snow better. Dave
