Here'sthe timing method I use. Get the #1 piston on the compression stroke and then rotate the engine by hand til you have the timing mark at the correct position. Loosen the distributor hold down bolt. Then take the #1 plug wire and put a paper clip or a bent wire in the spark plug boot and hold it near a good ground. Turn on the ignition key. The rotor should be pointing near the #1 plug wire terminal on the distributor cap. Now slowly rotate the distributor back and forth in small increments til you hear the #1 spark plug wire snap. At that point you are statically timed. You may have to do it a few times to get it just right and when you feel you have it, tighten down the hold down bolt. You really need a timing light to to check the advance mechanism and it's always good to recheck the static timing with the engine idling. You can often find a good timing light cheap on ebay. And yes you don't use them often, but when you need one you need it! Good luck.
