Don't cut it off. You drill it out and rust will still settle inside of it and plug it so you will still have to remove it all the time.
Use some tubing like others discussed. About an inch or so to keep the rust out. Copper pipe or rubber or plastic hose will probably work fine. I used a piece of screen door screen a couple inches long and wrapped it around the inlet a couple times and then held it in place with a twisted piece of small safety wire around it. Could make your tube with a couple wraps of screen and then JB weld the seam to hold it together and then stick it over the inlet.
