The unit will do timed backups of everything on your HDD, or just the Documents section, or however you set it up. very menu driven. Then use a Flash USB to transfer the files. I also believe your CD issue is (as indicated below) the fact that the CD was not "closed" using Nero or Most other CD burners, it is necessary to tell the computer to close the disk.
