Length of the wires won't be spit of a difference, except in pretty and eventually keeping them out of the way. Timing means no such thing as an EDUCATED GUESS. Find out which way the rotor is turning, then wire 1243, now find out which one is firing when the timing mark is showing, This will be YOUR #1, wire accordingly. Now if you get backfires and popping (some very loud) you move the wires as follows because you are 180* out of time; #1 to #4, #4 to #1, #2 to #3, #3 to #2
