When the heater is in the lower radiator hose wouldn't the convection flow be stopped by the thermostat in the engine? If so an overheat condition of the heater could occour unless the heater has an internal thermo protection t stat. A convection system depends upon the free movement of antifreeze solution because the heated water rises allowing cooler water to take its place at the heater, In a lower hose heater it must get its supply from the radiator, whose return flow is blocked by the thermostat in the top hose, Seems like a pretty inefficient poorly designed setup to me , I'll stick to the tried and true tank type that actually heat the block. mEl

There is no known history regarding its origins or what service it had done, but the following work was undertaken alone to bring it up to show standard.
