I had one in a Ford 3000 that didn't work very well. When I looked at the water flow patern the water came up from the bottom of the rad, through the heater then into the water pump. Problem was the pump was mounted high on the engine and heat from the heater would not go downhill into the block but the hose and pump got toasty. Perhaps you have a simular problem and your heater is overheating? Just a thought.
