I have some experience with the clutch on lo-boys. If it's pulling properly (ie, not slipping under load) the clutch disk itself is probably okay. There is a mechanism built into the clutch linkage that acts as a brake on the input shaft to the transmission when the clutch pedal is depressed all the way. If this linkage is not adjusted properly, the transmission will grind, even with a new clutch and pressure plate. It's been several years since I worked on one, so I don't remember the details. A good manual would be a dandy place to start. Can't help you on the rings, but it'd probably be easier in the long run to pull the engine. I use straight 30W in my gas tractors, and have had no complaints. If you're in an extremely hot or cold area, you might want to go with a multigrade, but I doubt it's critical.
