I agree, except with the "change a flat tire part", that's completely irrelevant of the drivers compentancy on the road.........If the person has to sit there for 4 hrs. before someone comes to change their flat tire that's no danger to the motoring public, provided they pulled off the road enough to let other cars by............
I'm always amused by the people that figure better drivers would be made if they "Had to take the test in a vehicle with a manual transmission" OR "Had to show that they could back-up or parallel park".................
How 'bout teaching them the basics first?
1/ PAY ATTENTION while driving(no cell phones, no checking your make-up in the mirror, etc.)EVEN go so far as to shoulder check when changing lanes AND watch the other car to see what it's going to do!
2/ Minumum safe following distance - six inches from the bumper of the vehicle in front of you does NOT cut it!
3/ Maximum safe approach speed to an intersection - Just because MOST vehicles are equipped with ABS and reliable brakes there is no need to to put those components to the test EVERY single time you stop, COAST up to the intersection!
4/ Drive according to road conditions - If there's a sheet of glare ice on the highway OR fog that only permits visiblity of approximately 6 feet, it's a safe bet that you'll have to drive SLOWER than the posted speed limit, i.e. MAYBE 20 or 30 instead of 70 in a 60 zone?
It's just a guess, BUT do you think if people worked on those few issues there'd be less accidents?
Knowing how to look after your vehicle is a good thing but not necessary providing you have someone doing it for you regularly.............Also, knowing how to drive a vehicle equipped with a manual transmission or being able to parallel park with only 1 foot of clearance is handy but not instrumental to the safety of yourself and others on the road...........
Anyway that's my rant, sorry Old but can't you tell?? I'm a disgruntled member of the motoring public! ;)

Today's Featured Article - Madison's County - by Anthony West. Philip Madison has been a good friend of mine for quite some time. He has patiently suffered my incessant chit chat on the subject of tractors for longer than I care to remember, and on many occasions he has put himself out, dropped what ever it was he was doing, to come and lend a hand cranking handles, or loading a find onto a trailer. Although he himself has never actually owned or restored a tractor, he was always enthusiastic and always around helping with other peoples projects.
