1st thing, the uhh accidental discharge, not good, 2nd, most of these type of rounds have the potential to penetrate things like you describe, some would punch clean through a home and it's contents. I can say that .308 military ball ammo will punch right through an old chevy tire rim at 200+ yards, punches it like a machine, same with '06 ball ammo, neck that bullet down to a .270, similar shape case and powder, and use a bullet that does not expand, or break up, you would be surprised at what a caliber like this can penetrate.
He needs to really check himself on that accidental discharge, we had a new hunter/friend do something like that, just to see if his shotgun was loaded, we were in a blind, he pulled the trigger, boom, nothing to shoot at, muzzle was not where it should have been, he was just seeing if it was loaded..... then he just about took the butt of one our stocks to the side of the head, in my book there ain't no excuse for any of this when it comes to firearms, CLEAR THAT WEAPON !!!!!!!!!! & follow safe protocol at all times, you will be safe, slack up and yeah you'll be doing unwanted penetration tests with the potential of serious injury or death.
See the link below, this guy could have bought it if he was 1" further to the left. I think the target was obviously something hard, not good.
