Before throwing a new gear in there, there are a few things to take a look at. Take a look at your shift shafts. They are a straight rod with little detents for the pawls to fall into. The detent can become wore and allow the shifter to slide out. The pawls can become worn, or the spring can become weak that holds the pawl. Also make sure the left to right adjustment of the shift shaft is correct to allow the shifter/pawl to fall into place. Also I believe the bearing in the case for the lower countershaft can get some slop in it. This will allow the shaft to move a little and allow the assembly to walk out of gear.
