A number of years ago, someone paid an astornomical price for a '56 Corvette that had supposedly once belonged to Elvis Presley. He even got the original bill of sale with it.
ONLY, Corvette experts picked it apart. The particular red color on the car hadn't been used until six months after the sale date, the dealer that sold it was out of business, but on the sale date Elvis was on the other end of the country, it was a stick shift and the sale date didn't jibe with the production of stick shift Corvettes, etc.
People who knew nothing of Corvettes, but who were experts on Elvis added their two bits worth. Elvis was traditionally a Cadillac and Lincoln man and no one knew of him ever owning a Corvette, in '56 his career was young enough he probably couldn't have afforded a Corvette, even if he wanted one, and the story went on.
Last I heard, the fellow who bought it was still convinced it was genuine.
