Sorry, you done hit it 100% wrong with all due respect. Your perception is indeed accepted by 99% of the folks that install locksets.
So you understand in simple terms as best I can describe it, best just try this and see for yourself.
That small rod MUST NOT ENTER THE HOLE IN THE STRIKE PLATE. (notice there is no extra opening for it from the factory?) Open your door and take your finger to the larger cylinder and slap it in with ease. Now hold the small rod in...this would simulate it not entering the hole in the strike plate. Now try to push the large cylinder in! Use a hammer if you so choose, it will not depress, thus making it less apt to be opened with a credit card.
I have found almost 100% of the locks instaled as you suggested, thats why I posted this.
Now so we all know locking your front door is just a feel good ordeal we all accept. Yet more than likley it has a window in the door, or maybe we have other windows in our houses any way.
