First off this was all at the age of 17.The first pulling tractor I ever had was an 80's YAMAHA, yes YAMAHA 5700 yard tractor 18 horse v twin. First off I had done alot of body work/painting to it to reduce weight, not a single soul believes me it is a yamaha anymore lol. well, it came from the factory with a hydro rearend. i pullled it in milltown without the hood and some tiny dual stacks i made, and some crappy fourwheeler tires on the back and did horrible, people laughed lol. well, i put some new very aggressive mud tires with 100 pounds of calcium chloride in each of the rear tires on the back, replaced the stacks with 3 inch anc chrome turn pipes...in sounded like a friggin truck with dual straight pipe on it. we test pulled our tahoe up a 8% grade in neutral and it did it! next year back in milltown, i was moving down the track heading for gold... and the rear end blew out...the wheels just stopped motor kept going. i got in last place, 3 ft behind just about everyone. it had been damaged by test pulling the tahoe.. everyone got a kick out of this again. Change of plans. i decided to kick the hydro. i wanted to put a 3 speed in the rearend, so i got one from jeffs in milltown (jeff is an awesome guy), i had talked to several people about it and they told me that it was impossible to put a geared in place of a hydro especially with a v twin. and that working as much as i had on a belt puller was a waste. Impossible? well i made some custom mounts for the 3 speed, took it apart, locked the differential (yes, 220 pounds of locked bear claw rear tires :O ) and found out the rear end was bad :) gears were crap. so i had to go get an industrial 3 speed rearand, build new mounts and locked that one as well. this one was good! built a homeade clutch system. it took me 55 hours or so of building clutch systems, tearing them down, and rebuilding until it actually worked. it wasn't easy. after i got the clutch right, the belt kept wanting to jump the rear flywheel, it was large but wasn't shallow. by the way, the v twin i had in this thing was a high rpm yamaha twin, designed for a hydro. in 3rd gear the lawnmower would go over 25 mph :O well, it was time to pull. i brought her to almelund this time, it had run PERFECTLY before hand, the first pull i was in 2nd gear pulling improved 800 moving 10+ mph when the belt broke. i had pulled too far for a re pull and placed last. I put a new belt on, and pulled 1000 pound improved, i started off, but pulling a wheely in the first pull twisted the frame, i moved about a foot and the belt jumped the pully and came off. by the way its not easy to get it back on.. a bunch of cocky guys on sidelines were yelling cmon! thats it???? so, i brought it home, the same day welded/reinforced the frame with about 100 pounds of steal cross braces. i brought a brand new pully with a deeper channel, cut the edges off the old pulley and welded them on the old one for even DEEPER grooves, and welded the thing on. i rebuilt the home made 4 pulley clutch again. AND THE FRIGGIN CARB WENT OUT. the fuel bowl bolt just tore out of the aluminum thread. the 500$ carb on this thing was now unfixable junk....!.... so i went up to the barn and pulled the carb off our 6800 yamaha and slapped it on ( i had to flush it, the thing hadnt been run in forever), it added two horsepower. and it all worked :) for once, since took the hydro out, it worked :) i was VERY HAPPY. well, i was driving around the yard, shut her off, tried re-starting it and the starter fried. Well, i went back out to that barn, pulled the started off the yamaha 6800 bolted it on and it was all good. I pull in almelund every year now, i never place anything less than first in 800 and 1000 pound improved. witht he smaller pulley on the rear, i pull around 15 mph in second gear and throw dirt about 7 ft in the air with the bear claws. milltown isn't even a question, i always win. moral of the story, stuff goes wrong, people are negative about things, and you going to be doubted often, but don't give up... if you want something to happen you can do it. if "experts" tell you what your trying to do can't be done it CAN. just try harder. I now have the meanest belt puller i have ever seen, and it whoops the pants of shaft driven cubs left and right.
