That sounds alarmingly like the justification for the "new math"- We don't know the answer, but at least we can feel good about how we tried to solve it. Trouble is, we need to get the math right to keep the bridge from falling down (and to get the economy out of the tank). I guess I'd feel better with someone who actually knows what he's doing.
But does anybody? The elephant in the closet in this situation is that we had a great deal of productive overcapacity, and more people employed than needed, just because we could afford them so long as business remained good. Now that its not, those jobs have gone away, and are not likely to return- corporations will learn how to do more with fewer people, through increased use of computers and automation, and changing business models (don't send sales people all over the country- just do computer meetings, where both can see each other and interact just like they were in the same place).
